SIERRA COLLEGE ACRONYMS

Always Consult Before Deciding: The official philosophy intended to guide all decisions made within the shared governance structure

assc Associated Students of Sierra College: The elected body which represents the interests of students in college planning; ASSC also has a non-voting position on the Board of Trustees
sccp

Sierra College Collaborative Process: The method Sierra uses to address & provide solutions for campus problems and concerns, with the goal of a mutually-beneficial, “win–win” resolution

scfa Sierra College Faculty Association: The CTA local union for Sierra’s faculty, with representatives from both part– and full-time faculty
shared governance Shared Governance: Collaborative process whereby the college's educational policies are determined jointly by students, faculty, classified staff, and administration; carried out through the Faculty Senate, Classified Senate, ASSC, and Management Senate

 

 

GOVERNMENT & REGULATORY ACRONYMS

AB 1725 Assembly Bill 1725: Passed in 1989, now Sec. 87482.6 of the Ed. Code; requires 75% of hours-of-credit instruction be taught by full-timers, but its loopholes weaken the law’s enforcement
BOG Board of Governors: Board under which the Community College Chancellor essentially “runs” the state’s Community College System
EDD Employment Development Department: California’s unemployment office
FTE Full-time Equivalency: An FTE load equals 15 teaching units at Sierra
perb Public Employee Relations Board: State agency that coordinates union elections & deals with unfair labor practices in public employment, including state & community colleges
prop 98

Proposition 98: Passed by the state's voters in 1988, this law was designed to guarantee a minimum level of funding for K-12 schools and community colleges (See A Primer on Prop 98)
